I'm getting threatening emails from some gmail address, how can I find out who sent the email? The account is just some made up gmail address that they made on the spot.
I know that you can find the IP address from the full email header, but is there anything else?
I don't want to get the police involved, since it's a lot of trouble, and I think it may just be a prank from one of my friends.
How can I trace an email to find out who sent it (other than the FROM field of course)?
There is no way to tie an IP address or a Google account to an individual's name.
If there is a criminal act, the police can get a court order for the ISP of the originating IP address to look up the subscriber name of that account that was using that IP.
If they are threatening, then take it to the police. If it;s your friends, they need to learn a lesson in common sense.
Reply:Gmail strips the senders IP from the header. The header is useless for a gmail account but it is stillpossible to identify the sender thru other investigative methods.
